Resumo: | The Railway played a key role in modern civilization, in such a way that we can still feel its impact on societies worldwide. With an historical journey attested by an extremely diverse if not, sometimes, surprising collection, it ranges from solid bridges and powerful locomotives to most delicate china sets. In its rampant expansion process, the mark left by the railroad in Portugal is compelling, leaving marks in its landscape, in its cities, in the heart and memory of its people. Dreamed by many for decades, the project of a railway museum for Portugal has evolved at the rhythm of several progresses, setbacks and adversities. It would be finally hosted by Entroncamento, a city that blends with the railroad itself, and whose mythic strength comes from this same history, identity and heritage authenticity, shaped in their buildings, their machines, the stories of life and travels, in their sounds, colors and smells ... Hardly any territory would be more favorable to the reconstruction of this memory. From material to immaterial testimonies (being those the collective memory connected to the railroad), the rail heritage that we strive to identify, preserve, interpret and present is immense and diverse. With a national range and having adopted a poly-nucleated structure, the Museum establishes its headquarters and main exhibition in the old Workshop Complex. It is here, in the Old Steam Workshop, monumental space and with high symbolic significance, that is proposed to expose adequately the heritage’s essence of this transport: the collection of rolling stock of the National Railway Museum. Comprehensive theme and indivisible from the heritage connected to tasks that served their maintenance (here in presence), this work has posed numerous questions about exhibition design in an industrial context in search of a discursive design that allows the establishment of a constant dialogue between objects, content, space and visitor. Working within a complex but challenging network of relationships, this is the object of the museographic project presented here |
