Resumo: With this present work, we pretend to discuss the way the body acts as a border in the space that it occupies and which are the implications in the construction of the psychic self. Taking as a focus western societies, we aim to create a relation between the modernity individual (19th and 20th centuries) and the nowadays individual (21st century). The urban, industrial, mechanical and technological revolutions changed the western Man deeply and the way he relates to space. The appearance of big western cities gave the first step in the social, psychological and spacial changes. The appearance of virtuality thickened these changes. By comparing oneself of modernity with oneself of actuality, we find similar feelings and behaviours: fragmentation of the self, solitude in the crowd, anxious life, need for affirmation, among others. However, the origins of these feelings end up being different. In the 19th and 20th centuries, we see that it’s due to the physical city space changes that people are affected. In the 21st century, besides the physical city space with origins prior, we find a non-physical space of virtuality (unstable, with diluted contents, with information lability). The relation of the body with these two realities is also different. If we find a passive body in modernity (e.g. the appearance of transportation like trains), we find an almost absent body in actuality (e.g. the use of vitality as a mean of personal expression). Our interest with this work is to think about ways that the individual can imagine and construct his own psychic self among these circumstances. Firstly, we develop the idea of body as border and vehicle in the space. Secondly, we further analyze how the 19th and 20th centuries are important for the current situation. Thirdly, we develop the idea of virtuality and its influences. Lastly, we explore artists that worked with these subjects and we will address the own artistic developments for this project report.
