Dadas as mudanças abruptas da sociedade, com a alteração da estrutura e organização das famílias, interessa compreender qual o entendimento que estas têm, actualmente, sobre os objectivos e o papel do Educador de Infância na creche. A resposta social de creche tem merecido, desde há alguns anos, especial atenção por parte dos legisladores, pelo facto de ser frequentada por crianças de mais tenra idade – dos zero aos três anos – que merecem qualidade no seu ensino e tratamento (Davison e Maguin, 1983). O Despacho Normativo do Ministério do Emprego e Segurança Social, de 1989, veio esclarecer os objectivos da creche, orientando todos os envolvidos para a compreensão do seu papel. Com base no documento que clarifica o Perfil Desempenho do Educador de Infância e do Professor dos Ensinos Básico e Secundário (2001), conseguimos perceber o papel deste profissional na creche e na vida da criança mais pequena (Martinez, 2007 e Mendonça, 1997). A par da creche está a família. Agente primordial de socialização, cabe-lhe o papel de cuidar, mimar e educar a criança. Entendendo que as famílias dos dias de hoje estão em mutação, havendo maior diversidade de modelos familiares (Gimeno, 2001), compete a esta instituição e à creche construir uma educação com alicerces, transmitindo valores irrefutáveis para o futuro da criança (Leleux, 2006). Percebendo a importância da relação creche/família para o desenvolvimento harmonioso da criança pequena compete a estas duas instituições desenvolverem competências para o seu envolvimento, num clima de compreensão mútua. Urge, pois, conhecer as representações da Família sobre o Educador. O presente estudo foi desenvolvido numa Instituição de Solidariedade Social (IPSS) em Oliveira de Azeméis (Centro de Apoio Familiar Pinto de Carvalho), tendo envolvido os encarregados de educação das crianças que frequentam a creche, no total de 30. Os principais objectivos deste trabalho consistem em caracterizar o modo como a família perspectiva o Educador de Infância a nível da sua competência profissional e em descrever o seu entendimento quanto à participação do Educador na gestão da creche. Pretende, ainda, conhecer o modo como a família valoriza a relação que mantém com o Educador de Infância. Os dados foram recolhidos através de questionário. Os resultados revelam que os familiares das crianças que frequentam a creche esperam que o Educador de Infância desempenhe funções essencialmente pedagógico/educativas, desenvolvendo a criança a nível social, da linguagem, cognitivo e motor. Reconhecem, ainda, a importância do Educador de Infância na gestão da creche, uma vez que é este profissional que se relaciona com as crianças e com os restantes adultos que frequentam esta resposta social. This thesis studies the social representations of the family about the Early Childhood Educator in kindergarten. Given the sudden changes in society, accompanied by an alteration in the structure and organization of families, it is important to understand how the families view and what they know about the purposes and the role of the early childhood educator in kindergarten. Kindergartens have been getting, for some years now, special attention from legislators, due to the fact that tender-aged children - babies to three-year-olds – attend kindergartens and they deserve quality in the teaching and treatment they get (Davison and Maguin, 1983). The 1989 dispatch issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security clarified the purposes of kindergarten, guiding all the people involved towards the understanding of each one’s role. Based on this document that clarifies the profile of performance of an Early Childhood Educator and of junior and high school Teachers (2001), we are able to understand the role of this professional in kindergarten and in the life of the younger child (Martinez, 2007 and Mendonça, 1997). The family is side by side with kindergarten. Being a fundamental socializing agent, it bears the role of taking care of, fondling and educating the child. Understanding that today’s families are changing, since there is a wider diversity of family models (Gimeno, 2001), it is up to the family to build an education with foundations, passing on irrefutable values for the child’s future (Leleux, 2006). Realizing the importance of kindergarten/family relationship for the young child’s harmonious development, it is up to these two institutions to develop the skills for their involvement, in an environment of mutual understanding. So, it is urgent to get to know the representations of the family about the early childhood educator. This study was developed at a charity enterprise (Centro de Apoio Familiar Pinto de Carvalho), in Oliveira de Azeméis, Portugal, and it involved the guardians of the children who attend the kindergarten, in a total of 30. The main purposes of this study consist in characterizing the way how the family expects the early childhood educator to be, in terms of his/her professional competence and in describing their understanding as to the participation of the educator in kindergarten management. The study also aims to get to know the way how the family values the relationship it maintains with the early childhood educator. The data was gathered through a questionnaire. The results show that the relatives of the children who attend kindergarten expect the early childhood educator to perform mainly pedagogical and educational functions, stimulating the child at a social, linguistic, cognitive and motor level.
