Impactes directos, indirectos e induzidos da actividade termal na economia local: os casos de São Pedro do Sul e Monfortinho

In rural places lacking a dense economic structure, tourism facilities are often viewed as engines of local economic growth and development. However, prior studies seeking to investigate the role played by rural tourism facilities, and in particular thermal SPAs, on local economic growth and development in Portugal are limited to the direct impact of such facilities on local economy – revenues, value added, and employment accounted for by the activities directly impacted by the tourists’ spending. The studies conducted so far in Portugal tend to ignore the multiplier effects of the local thermal SPAs on the remainder local economic activities. This study contributes to fill this gap by estimating the total economic impact (direct, indirect, and induced) of a Portuguese rural thermal SPA in the local economy. In so doing, it develops Closed Leontief models for two local economies – Monfortinho and São Pedro do Sul. These two case studies were chosen because they constitute two extreme cases in terms of the magnitude of the total local economic impact of a Portuguese rural thermal SPA. Given the disproportion of the local intra-industry linkages between the activities directed impacted by the thermal SPA and the remainder local economic activities, Monfortinho comes close to the weakest total economic impact a rural Portuguese thermal SPA can have in the local economy whereas São Pedro do Sul comes close to the strongest impact. The models estimates suggest that each €100 spent by tourists in a Portuguese rural thermal SPA will generate a total effect on the local economy ranging from €140 to €156 in terms of local production; from €70 and €80 of value added locally; and between 0.0051 and 0.0053 employments in full-time equivalent.
