Expectativas sobre a investigação científica em embriões: decisores políticos e casais em procriação medicamente assistida

Resumo: This paper analyzes the expectations and rationalities of policy makers and of couples in assisted reproductive technologies in Portugal regarding the decision to donate embryos for scientific research. The interrelationships between the political and lay fields are discussed, based on the content analysis of the following information sources: political speeches which supported the proposal for creating an information system for embryo donors identical to the system for biological organ donors; interviews conducted between August 2011 and August 2012 with 221 couples and 93 women involved in in vitro fertilization or intracytoplasmic sperm injection, regarding the donation of embryos for research, at Hospital de S. João, Porto. Policymakers and couples are both highly receptive to scientific progress and have high expectations and confidence in the therapeutic power of scientific research on embryonic stem cells. Couples use the ethic of reciprocity, altruism and social responsibility to justify their decisions, whereas policy makers emphasize the contributions of advances in science to the economic field and the promotion of the image of the country. These results reinforce the need to strengthen the participation of various stakeholders in the construction of ethical and social responsibility principles for the regulation of research practices involving embryos of human origin.

Les relations entre les domaines politique et civil sont examinées avec l’analyse du contenu des sources d’information suivantes: les discours politiques qui ont soutenu la proposition pour établir un système d’information pour les donneurs d’embryons similaires au système des donneurs d’organes; entretiens sur le don d’embryons pour la recherche, réalisés entre Août 2011 et Août 2012 à 221 couples et 93 femmes qui ont fait la fécondation in vitro ou l’injection intracytoplasmique de spermatozoïdes, à l’hôpital de S. João, Porto. Les décideurs et les couples sont réceptifs à la recherche et déposent des attentes élevées et confiance en le potentiel thérapeutique de la recherche sur les cellules souches embryonnaires. D’un côté les couples utilisent l’éthique de la réciprocité, la responsabilité sociale et l’altruisme pour justifier leurs décisions; de l’autre côté, les décideurs soulignent les contributions du progrès scientifique pour le développement économique et pour la promotion de l’image du pays. Ces résultats renforcent la nécessité d’une plus grande participation des différents publics pour construire des principes éthiques et de responsabilité sociale de la réglementation de la recherche sur l’embryon humain.Neste artigo analisa-se a circulação de expectativas e racionalidades de decisores políticos e de casais em procriação medicamente assistida, em Portugal, em torno da decisão quanto à doação de embriões para investigação científica. As interpenetrações entre a esfera política e a leiga serão discutidas com base na análise de conteúdo das seguintes fontes de informação: discursos políticos que suportaram a proposta de criação de um sistema de informação para os dadores de embriões idêntico ao sistema dos dadores de órgãos biológicos; entrevistas conduzidas entre Agosto 2011 e Agosto 2012 a 221 casais e 93 mulheres envolvidos em fertilização in vitro ou injeção intracitoplasmática de espermatozoides, no Hospital de S. João, Porto, sobre doação de embriões para investigação. Decisores políticos e casais partilham uma elevada recetividade ao progresso científico e depositam elevadas expectativas e confiança no poder terapêutico da investigação científica em células estaminais embrionárias. Se os casais usam a ética da reciprocidade, responsabilidade social e altruísmo para justificar as suas decisões; os decisores políticos realçam os contributos dos avanços da ciência para a esfera económica e promoção da imagem do país.
