Resumo: This dissertation focuses on virtual reality and its relationship with architecture. The recent developments and democratization of VR facilitates its access to architects and architecture ateliers and opens up multiple possibilities of use that need to be identified, imagined and tested.This work is structured in four chapters. The first introduces the theme and problematizes it, raising the tip of the veil over virtual reality and architecture. Addressing the historical context of VR in architecture, it seeks to understand the current interest in this technology and its integration into the project practice. The second chapter investigates the technological advances of VR, emphasizing their diffusion and use in several areas, from the sciences, to the arts and to entertainment. The third one, examines the interest of the RV for the discipline of architecture, proposing four different domains for its application: conception, visualization, simulation and object. To help inform the previous study and enable personal training in the field, the last chapter presents and illustrates a personal experience of applying VR in architecture. This project aimed to build a VR model of the FAUP building in order to provide an alternative mode for visiting it or, in other words, to inhabit it without having to be physically in the site.As it is revealed in historical and theoretical study, and in personal experience, when establishing a real-scale immersion of the subject in space, the RV model questions some assumptions associated with architecture, such as the idea of representation or the concept of dwelling. This dissertation intends to contribute to the information and updated disciplinary discussion of this theme.
