Resumo: Stemming from the same thought, different ways of seeing and acknowledging the world are possible, as there are different ways of measuring the places that embed our homes. The way of making architecture that takes into account this first acknowledgment of a place, searching for the hidden geometry of the site, can be recognized as a process that carries with it a sensibility, as subjective and as objective as it can be. Recognizing this subjectivity presupposes recognizing the role of the author as he designs, but also the plurality of values that a place encloses and, thus, the multiple readings and narratives that can be drawn from it. The Labyrinth of Time: journey to the work of Paulo David intends to deepen the Madeiran architect's work, his discourse and narratives, as well as his theoretical and practical production, in an attempt to approach what might be his architectural project. The main goal is to question the meanings behind his interventions, mainly built in an insular context - the Madeira's island - the context where Paulo David works, recognizing, even though, the importance of leaving the island in an attempt to better comprehend it. Models, drawings, photographs and books fill Paulo David's atelier, in Funchal. In a first moment of biographical framing of the author and ponder on the journey to his place, we propose to reflect on learn the way back, as well as the experience of live in an island. Of the more than twenty years old practice, a small number of projects were built, along with numerous other projects that never saw the light of day, and which remains anonymous and unpublished. On one hand, we recognize the opportunity to document and contribute to the recognition of Paulo David's work; on the other, the main goal is not to do a monographic document, but rather to create a space for reflection, which is why we propose to debate, on a second moment, on the meanings of place, matter, form and city, through the analysis of four case studies: Casa das Mudas Arts Centre, House in Herdade do Barrocal, Armazém do Mercado and Gabinete da Cidade. At last, we cogitate on the diachronic nature of Paulo David's work.
