Resumo: Swiss architecture is a considerable international benchmark for innovation and experimentation, and that is due in part to its close relationship with art. This research focuses on the swiss architectural practice in the course of the twentieth century, and analyses the relationships it establishes, especially at the level of architectural design, with modern and contemporary art, in the form of theoretical and creative influences. By proposing the understanding of swiss architectural practice as a means of mediation between architecture and different visual arts, the present study constitutes a possibility to investigate the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in the creation of architectural projects and the relevance that artists can assume in this process, namely painters in the conception of chromatic atmospheres. The exploration aims to clarify the relationship between the quality of swiss architecture, or certain currents of swiss architecture, and the influence of other artistic fields, delimiting the artistic movements involved in this relationship. It also aims to deepen the interdisciplinary collaborations between artists and architects, analysing their contribution to the field of architecture. In a more analytical moment of the dissertation, it intends to focus specifically on the pictorial practice of some swiss painters, namely in the conception of architectural atmospheres together with architects, highlighting examples of architectural works designed in an interdisciplinary way. In this way, the present dissertation shapes three questions to the architectural practice of this country. The first question, "why is swiss architectural production relevant in the european architectural panorama?", is posed by considering various examples of swiss architects and their works. The second question, "in what way does swiss artistic practice influence swiss architectural production?", discusses the relevance of the contamination between the two disciplines towards a common end, the architectural work. The third question - more comprehensive and fostering a wide variety of themes and questions -, "what lessons can we draw and learn from swiss cultural production?", aims to highlight the architectural practice of this country as one of the vanguards in exploring the collaborative potential between architecture and visual arts. It concludes that the collaborative interaction between architects and artists is a means capable of producing stimulation and enrichment of the expressive means of architecture, in the specific case of colour, broadening this spectrum and challenging its limits and aesthetic paradigms.
