Resumo: This paper deals with career development in the school context as far as its time and organizational dimensions are concerned. Throughout the paper a historical and political analysis of vocational guidance is done. Having in mind the focus of the policy makers, as well as the last social and economical changes, the evolution that is occurring in the practice of this domain is stressed. Furthermore, vocational guidance is contextualized in the Portuguese educational system. Finally some structural and organizational changes are suggested.

É feita ao longo do texto uma abordagem histórica e política da Orientação Vocacional. É enfatizada, a partir do interesse suscitado a nível dos decisores políticos e das transformações sociais e económicas recentes, a evolução que ocorre ao nível da intervenção neste domínio. Posteriormente, é efectuada uma caracterização da intervenção vocacional em contexto escolar no sistema educativo português.
