Resumo: | Background Professor Carlos Ribeiro da Silva Lopes (1906-1997) was a prestigious Physician and Professor at the Medical School of the University of Porto (FMUP), with outstanding merit in the field of Legal Medicine. This dissertation aims to pay tribute to his legacy, an example of success and leadership, and to highlight the Man behind the Portuguese medical personality. Methods The bibliographical research was based on the analysis of the legacy available in the FMUP Library and in the Archive of Museum of Medical History "Maximiano Lemos", complemented with the information collected through interviews with different personalities that were important in his career. Results The Professor graduated in Medicine and Surgery from FMUP, in 1930. The Professor climbed all the steps of the academic career until he became Full Professor of Legal Medicine and Forensic Toxicology, in 1960, the same year that he took over the direction of the Institute of Legal Medicine. Discussion Professor Carlos Lopes stood out by teaching, researching, and providing services to the community within the scope of Legal Medicine and Forensic Toxicology. He reconciled these activities with other responsibilities in the field of Medicine, namely the conduction of the History of Medicine and Medical Deontology at FMUP and the direction of Museum of Medical History "Maximiano Lemos". Conclusion The Professor followed an exemplary path, recognized by his colleagues for his extraordinary devotion to the positions he held through his vision, humanity, and exceptional diplomacy. He will be remembered as a reference of excellence of FMUP and Portuguese Legal Medicine, leaving us with a renowned bibliography at national and international level. |
