Resumo: Brazil’s maritime character is given by many colonial cities’ seaside formation and by the coastal public nature established by law, although beaches can express excluding dynamics. Segregation, urban dynamics, and beach uses contributing to well-being are frequent literature themes for the study of cities, but little interconnected. Understanding that spatial form helps join or separate people, this paper investigates location in the urban grid, sociospatial patterns, networks and mobility of beach uses in João Pessoa city, North-east Brazil. Demographic data, analysis of location in the urban grid and data collected with beachgoers were used. Results indicate that densities distribute more in the city following urban centralities while there is a clear separation of the more economically privileged population living close to the sea. In compensation, these beaches receive visitors mixing distinct social profiles, from people coming from different places accentuating attractivity capable of creating spaces of potential encounter between different people in the city, especially at the most integrated beaches in the urban grid. Still, costs of distance and time to visit beaches are greater for the economically underprivileged, reinforcing inequalities to access leisure at the beach.
