Resumo: | At Brazilian coastal cities, urban beaches relief people daily life and contribute to social interactions. While studies connect uses to form or uses and perception for beach maintenance, few studies relate urban and built form with beach uses and social life related with urban dynamics. Earlier research showed that Bessa beach – the longest in João Pessoa -, while less connected with the urban grid than other urban beaches, was popular for people coming from different places. This paper investigates the hypothesis that catering facilities (restaurants/bars) situated on the beach sand – on Bessa beach Jardim Oceania neighbourhood section – attract people from further away. Location, urban form and uses were investigated in three places – with and without catering – for field surveys inquiring about beachgoers habits, evaluation and profiles. Catering devices attract groups of people – either families or friends - coming from further away while the beach stretch without catering devices is visited mostly by people that live nearby, walking. Results validate the hypothesis indicating, beyond the sea, catering devices attractiveness and characterizing beach places different social lives related to complex coastal urban dynamics. |
