Resumo: This essay proposes to analyse the role of a last will and testament and of an entitlement of heirs as a means of post mortem communication, meticulously shaped by its own cultural aspect. Based on a Masters dissertation working within the Portuguese-English language pairing, we start by giving a theoretical background on translation, moving on to an historical context for the documents at hand, so as to better show their role in society. We then carry out a terminological and discursive analysis that intends to identify – and solve – potentially problematic issues that may vex the translator. As such, we hope to contribute to the development of methodologies to better translate testaments and entitlements of heirs.

Baseado numa dissertação de Mestrado com o par de línguas português-inglês, procede-se a uma fundamentação teórica de tradução e a uma contextualização histórica dos documentos, de forma a melhor ilustrar os seus papéis na sociedade. Entra-se depois numa fase de levantamento terminológico-discursivo, que pretende identificar – e resolver – questões potencialmente problemáticas que poderão assomar o tradutor que se aventure nesta tipologia textual.
