Resumo: This article deals with the art of sculpting saints in wood and clay in Brazilian Catholicism as a way of materializing the religious experience of artisans and devotees. Starting from a brief summary of the history of devotion to images in the formation of devotional Catholicism in colonial Brazil, it presents a clipping of the current scenario of santeira art (saint sculpture art), produced in several Brazilian states, showing how it eventually detached itself from sacred art and started to produce images with personal characteristics conceived by each artisan, which distinguish them and transform them into objects of art and consumption, desired by collectors, not always devotees.
