Resumo: This essay examines the origins and implementation of industrial education in Portugal within the socio-cultural context of the second half of the nineteenth century. Besides, the article addresses the contribution made, among others, by Passos Manuel, Costa Cabral, Fontes Pereira de Melo, Crisóstomo de Abreu e Sousa, António Augusto de Aguiar, Emídio Navarro and João Franco.
