Resumo: In a society where the image of architecture plays a leading role and where the seduction of shapes outweighs the actual experiencing of space, it is important to consider its role in the construction of architectural experience. Contemporary architecture seems to come down to a set of images, renders, sites and publications in absence of plastic and formal values, i.e. a narcissistic and retinal architecture, which promotes a seductive image, neglecting the center element of space: Mankind. An image will never provide the bodily experience of space. This experience can only be achieved by living it. Should architecture limit itself to an experience based upon images alone? Or should architecture translate into a bodily experience instead, linked to the senses and to Mankind, creating an environment, an atmosphere? Architecture is much more than a pure and tangible physical object intersecting the realm of intangible and immaterial. This paper proposes to bridge the physical and the material dimension of architecture, looking for the enhancers of an architectural atmosphere and how can architecture change our daily lives. Certainly, the role of architecture is not to invoke emotions, but rather solving a problem in a given situation and context. However, should not architecture be more than a mere problem solving given its history, its language, its memories and associations? When architecture transcends the simple solution for a problem, space touches us and we know intuitively that we are experiencing an atmosphere, an ineffable and indescribable space. Thus, the atmosphere exists when architecture transcends its everyday use and relinquishes its technical and material dimension and its programmatic approach, giving us something more, an experience that will be forever engraved on our mind. But how can architects create atmospheres? Which are the elements involved in the creation of atmospheres? Is it even possible to create an atmosphere? It will be of interest to find the premisses which allow for the construction of an ineffable space, i.e., an atmosphere which transcends us, harmonizing body and mind, Mankind and architecture, rational and irrational, material and immaterial.
