In this study, I analyse aspects of the formation of the Portuguese language from the period of its prehistory and protohistory until the Portuguese language acquired a considerable degree of stability during the medieval period. This analysis contributes to the understanding of the main aspects of language formation, highlighting the importance of evolution through contact between languages, whether with the Celtic language - as substrate influence -, or with the Germanic and Arabic languages - as a superstratum influence. The specific evolution of Galician-Portuguese romance is also analysed in comparison with that of Castilian romance, individualizing it within the scope of the languages to which it is historically linked, highlighting a set of conservation and evolutionary traits that characterize the northwestern Iberian romance and define its identity and uniqueness. This study seeks to explain how, throughout the medieval period, a situation of variation with different norms was eliminated and the language stabilized and acquired a considerable degree of stability with the formation of the standard norm of modern Portuguese.
