Relationship between Natural Gas Consumption and Economic Growth

Resumo: Motivated by the effects of the use of non-renewable energies such as natural gas, this dissertation aim to analyse the effect of natural gas consumption on economic growth. In this work, panel data techniques are used covering 16 cover countries, these being the largest consumers of natural gas, according to mundi index, with annual frequency and a time horizon from 1995 to 2017. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model has proven to be the most suitable for capturing the dynamic relationship in short- and longterm effects. The results indicate a positive relationship between natural gas consumption and economic growth both in the short and long term application.

Neste trabalho são utilizadas técnicas de dados em painel que abrange 16 países, sendo estes os maiores consumidores de gás natural, segundo a Index Mundi, com frequência anual e um horizonte temporal de 1995 até 2017. Devido às características dos dados, o modelo Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) provou ser o mais adequado para capturar a relação dinâmica em efeitos de curto e longo prazo.
