Objetivos: O presente estudo pretendeu estudar as caracter?sticas psicom?tricas do Fertility and Infertility Treatment Knowledge Score (FIT-KS) numa amostra da popula??o geral portuguesa. / Introduction: The knowledge about fertility is understood with the following comprehension that people have about fertility, the individual and non-individual risk factors that interfere in the options of creating a family. Objectives: The present study aimed to study the psychometric characteristics of the Fertility and Infertility Treatment Knowledge Score (FIT-KS) in a sample of the general Portuguese population. This instrument assesses knowledge about fertility, infertility treatments, and factors that affect fertility. Methodology: The sample consisted of 273 participants of reproductive age (18 to 45 years old), 243 (89%) women and 30 (11%) men, with an average age of 29.56 years (SD = 6.79). Participants completed an online sociodemographic questionnaire, the FIT-KS, the General Nutrition Knowledge Questionnaire (GNKQ) and the Fertility Awareness (FA). In order to analyze the reliability was done the test-retest of the FIT-KS Results: The internal consistency of the FIT-KS, assessed through the Kuder-Richardson coefficient, showed a value of 0.43. The average difficulty of the items was 0.57 and the variation in item discrimination was, -0,19 a 0,29 on average, 0,10. Regarding the convergent validity, a Spearman correlation of r = 0.47 (p <0.001) was observed between FIT-KS and FA. In terms of divergent validity, the correlation between FIT-KS and GNKQ was r = 0.06 (p = 0.307). The temporal stability of FIT-KS over a period of 4 weeks was 0.63 (p = 0.001). The average of correct answers was 17 (58.62%). Most participants are aware that both sexes contribute to the couple's fertility, which age range is the woman's highest fertility and which is the optimal time to get pregnant. They know that smoking and obesity have an impact on fertility, but the responses are dispersed as to the impact of using the contraceptive pill and sexual lubricants. To add an underestimation of the abortion rate, and the success of In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) in women aged 35. On the other hand, an overestimation of IVF success was found in women over 40 years of age, declining fertile age and birth rate by thawed oocytes. Conclusion: The FIT-KS allows to identify areas where there is a greater lack of knowledge about fertility and infertility treatments, pointing out specific targets in future measures to raise awareness/information about these aspects. Greater education and awareness are needed so that the population makes informed and conscious decisions about starting a family. |
