Resumo: | Home Palliative Care Teams are the most important support of a national program of palliative care, because they allow health care to be provided where most people, at the end-of-life, would wish it to happen - at home. Moreover, these teams have proved to be more effective and efficient than other types of palliative care teams. In this study, we present a geographical distribution of such teams, justifying its rationale. To ensure accessibility for all users of the National Health System, these teams must have uniform distribution for all country, based on identification or estimate the needs of each region. Using two different methodologies for estimating requirements, supported in Portuguese demographic data for the year 2009, we propose that between 106 and 160 teams will be needed. According to the latest indications from the European Association for Palliative Care, which refers to need a team for every 100 000 inhabitants, the estimated value for Portugal is 106 teams. |

Home palliative care teams in Portugal: how many and whereEquipas de cuidados paliativos domiciliários: quantas e onde são necessárias em PortugalHome Palliative Care Teams are the most important support of a national program of palliative care, because they allow health care to be provided where most people, at the end-of-life, would wish it to happen - at home.
