The unusual in José Saramago's "Memorial do Convento"

Resumo: This study has as main objective the analysis of the unusual in the novel Baltasar and Blimunda (1982), by José Saramago, and the identification of the characteristics of magical realism present in it. Baltasar and Blimunda have as historical space the reign of D. John V in the century XVIII and it has two main narratives: the one of Blimunda and Baltasar, the representatives of the less favored class and the one of the king and his wife, the representatives of the wealthy class. Thus, the silenced and the oppressed, in the past, have great relevance in the novel and contribute to the questioning of the official history, which was written by the ruling classes. By means of fantastic elements, irony and sarcasm, the author induces readers to reflect and make social critiques, besides that it evokes the collective memories indispensable to the construction of the national identity. Using a qualitative, documentary-based methodology, this article aims to contribute to reinforcing the leading place of Saramago's work today.

Memorial do Convento tem como tempo histórico o reinado de D. João V, no século XVIII, e possui duas narrativas principais: a de Blimunda e de Baltasar, representantes da classe menos favorecida e a do rei e sua esposa, representantes da classe dominante. Assim, as vozes dos silenciados e dos oprimidos no passado têm grande relevância no romance e contribuem para o questionamento da história oficial, que foi escrita pelas classes dominantes. Por meio de elementos fantásticos, da ironia e do sarcasmo, o autor faz uma crítica social e leva os leitores a refletir, para além de evocar memórias coletivas indispensáveis para a construção da identidade nacional.
