Resumo: | This study has as main objective the analysis of the unusual in the novel Baltasar and Blimunda (1982), by José Saramago, and the identification of the characteristics of magical realism present in it. Baltasar and Blimunda have as historical space the reign of D. John V in the century XVIII and it has two main narratives: the one of Blimunda and Baltasar, the representatives of the less favored class and the one of the king and his wife, the representatives of the wealthy class. Thus, the silenced and the oppressed, in the past, have great relevance in the novel and contribute to the questioning of the official history, which was written by the ruling classes. By means of fantastic elements, irony and sarcasm, the author induces readers to reflect and make social critiques, besides that it evokes the collective memories indispensable to the construction of the national identity. Using a qualitative, documentary-based methodology, this article aims to contribute to reinforcing the leading place of Saramago's work today. |
