Resumo: The DATA SINS design project introduces the concept of data colonialism by highlighting the foundations that sustain it as an emerging phenomenon from the early 21st century. Through the discipline of speculative design, the project aims to show how most rationalities around connectivity and big data obscure digital neocolonial appropriation in which the translation of social life into data relations becomes the direct input for a new form of capitalist production via surveillance. Thus, the extrapolation of these practices on a global scale generates the basis for an unequal social arrangement incompatible with human freedom and autonomy. To examine the continuity of colonial motivations, the investigation first analyzes the historical colonialism in Brazil to lay the foundation for a speculative future scenario. This scenario manifests a new form of religious conservative nationalism, supported by an unique political, economic and social arrangement that binds together notions of prosperity and salvation. The modern neo colonial project, grounded in previous colonial attitudes, culminates in a reductive gamification of life. The investigation develops through a discursive practice that gathers the visual speculations generated by artificial intelligence software in order to offer a novel critical approach to speculative design practices. The investigation manifests in a short animated video wherein the narrative presents a series of products and services converted into artifacts and sacred rituals of data worship. DATA SINS is a satire that intends to provoke reflection through humor and exaggeration as well as to introduce the concept of data colonialism, contextualized within society's omnipresent struggle against its colonial past.
