Resumo: The architecture developed by NGOs faces nowadays a lot of constancy and diversity, given the globalization phenomenon that we're living. If one or two centuries ago, the so-called developed countries were present in the countries of the Global South as colonizers, nowadays this presence remains in the form of non-governmental initiatives. Although housing is considered a fundamental right in its form of dignified house, it currently does not cover about 880 million people worldwide. Sub-Saharan Africa, in turn, is one of the regions that has contributed with one of the largest numbers of people living in informal settlements, as well as widespread poverty. This dissertation investigates one of the forms of volunteering to provide a fairer urban setting in these situations. After a general framework of the African urban problem, a state point of the place that these practices occupy in Contemporary Architecture is made, exploring contents and terminologies produced by the specialized literature. These concepts - poverty, right to the city, State, NGOs, participation and self-construction - will be the essential basis for the analysis of a set of projects that will serve as a sample for this study. Given the varied nature of such initiatives in political, geographical and institutional contexts, the activity of Architects Without Borders in Mozambique will be analyzed in an attempt to extract common denominators to enable a global analysis of the architectural practices by NGOs. Through this dissertation, projects carried out by ASF Denmark and ASF Catalonia in Mozambique will be analyzed; their processes will be interpreted in the light of the concepts previously outlined. From this analysis, the (dis)continuities between the actors of these interventions will be deduced and, lastly, a reflection about the social role of the architect - agent of change as well as the academic role of the universities - partly shaping the thinking of the future change agents.
