Resumo: In the practice of architecture, as an elemental part of a bigger process that aims to build, designing plays an indirect role, since it does not, by itself, originate the building. This particular aspect generates a distance between the architect´s direct work and his eventual goal. A space rife with the possibility to exalt or distort the original intention. In that space, the architect plays an undefined role, since generally, the systematization of the architectural pratices limits itself to the design stage. This research aims to close the gap between the architect and his built work, by analysing the methods and intentions of those who approach the building site as a stage for the architectural process, just another phase of his professional practice. The knowledge provided by the direct contact with the construction details, materials, methods and sensations, with which you make architecture, the self confidence needed to adjust the design to the unforseen circunstances of reality, all of this is born from an experience that can only be aquired in loco. An experience that leads the architect to design as one would build. This search, for that which leads to the architect's approach or withdrawal from the building site, is comprised by the analysis of several aspects: the evolution of this relationship throughout history; the legal prohibitions or obligations currently in place in Portugal; the means with wich the architect can shorten that gap and, at lastly, the architects within my context, the Escola do Porto, position themselves in this matter.
