Universidade de LisboaThe objective of this study was to evaluate if biodegradable films made of Polylactic acid (PLA) and cellulose-based materials (NatureFlex) are potential substitutes for conventional plastic films (oriented polypropylene (OPP)) used in packaging of minimally processed spinach in heat sealed flexible packages. PLA and OPP films presented a negligible water vapour adsorption, independently of the aw value, while NatureFlex showed a higher water vapour adsorption capacity, increasing from 8% (aw= 0.12) to 52% (dry basis) (aw = 0.87). In terms of water vapour permeability, the PLA film showed a higher value (around 1.10 x 10-12 mol.m/(m2.s.Pa)) than NatureFlex (6.32x10-13 mol.m/(m2.s.Pa)) and OPP (8.75 x 10-14 mol.m/ (m2.s.Pa)). In the minimally processed spinach preservation study at 4ºC, the higher weight decrease due to water loss was detected using the NatureFlex film (around 29 % after 10 days). Regarding the gas composition of the packages’ internal atmosphere, those made of PLA were the ones showing a high variation of O2 and CO2 concentrations over time (with values of 8.1 % of O2 and 8.9 % of CO2 after 10 days). This fact was attributed to the low gas permeability of the PLA film (PO2 = 2.97x10-16 m2/s; PCO2 = 1.22x10-15 m2/s). The effect of the different materials tested on spinach texture, antioxidant activity and microbial growth, was not significantly different during 10 days at 4ºC. Based on all the results obtained from the biodegradable films tested, PLA is the one with a higher potential to be used in minimally processed spinach packagings.n.Alves, Vítor DelgadoMartins, Margarida MoldãoRepositório da Universidade de LisboaOliveira, Joana Filipa Canha20212025-09-01T00:00:00Z2021-01-01T00:00:00Zinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisapplication/pdfhttp://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/25418engOliveira, J.F.C. - Application of biodegradable packaging materials in the preservation of minimally processed spinach.
