Resumo: | The present dissertation explores the history, capacities, limitations and potentialities that make one of the most predominant materials, albeit subtly, in architecture. The stone has and builds a rich, extensive and complex heritage, consequent of the areas and disciplines covered by it. Despite the arrival of the modern 20th century materials such as reinforced concrete and steel, and the alienation of stone from the structural panorama, stone's ornamental and mechanical values still prevail and mesmerize.Through a multifaceted study and analysis, originated from the desire to investigate such preponderant substance in the definition of identity and memory, this dissertation explores and presents the various fields of knowledge pertinent to build a broad understanding of what defines stone as a building material and architectural tool. Stone is presented through three lenses that constitute the three main chapters of this work: Matter, Method and Materialization. In the first chapter, Matter, physical, mechanical and chemical proprieties and phenomena are explored, as well as the processes that generate, transform and attack stone, making it (un)suitable as a building material. In Method, the technological evolution of the material's manipulation throughout history is analyzed through a study of the industry, the market and the techniques of contemporary stone products. Finally, in Materialization, it's displayed the range of possibilities unlocked by the understanding and mastering of the characteristics that define stone and its products as they are. This work must be understood as an explorative and expository exercise of compromise between the pamphlet and the technical manual. The root of its structure lies in the intellectual development of the understanding of stone's virtues and potentialities, but without relying on approaches that could be too technical, bureaucratic or procedural. |
