Deste modo, torna-se premente analisar os efeitos dos tratamentos realizados, pelo que o objetivo deste trabalho é rever a literatura atual acerca do uso da oxigenoterapia hiperbárica (OHB) nesta enfermidade e entender de que forma o tratamento poderá beneficiar os doentes. Materiais e métodos: A pesquisa foi realizada seguindo as guidelines Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). Através duma pesquisa nas bases de dados Pubmed, Cochrane e Web of Science com recurso às palavras-chave “sudden hearing loss”, “hyperbaric oxygen”, “salvage”, “sudden sensorineural hearing loss” e “HBO” foram reunidos diversos artigos adequados ao objetivo desta revisão de literatura sobre a surdez neurossensorial súbita. Resultados: Na pesquisa da literatura foram encontrados 56 documentos, porém após análise dos artigos duplicados e a aplicação dos critérios de exclusão, foram incluídos exclusivamente 8 artigos. Assim, foram considerados nesta revisão um total de 545 pacientes e 547 ouvidos. Porém, de modo a avaliar a terapêutica primária em uso nestes casos analisou-se os resultados da sua aplicação a 405 ouvidos e por último para verificar a eficácia da terapêutica de resgate observou-se o resultado de 142 ouvidos. O uso da OHB é um fator comum a todos os estudos. Conclusão: A aplicação de corticoterapia e OHB revelou-se como uma boa opção terapêutica para pacientes com início de sintomas num intervalo de tempo inferior a 14 dias. No entanto, devido à multiplicidade de metodologias usadas, nos casos com início da sintomatologia entre 14 dias e 4 semanas, não é clara qual a abordagem terapêutica com melhores resultados. Porém, fatores como a presença de vertigem, a idade avançada, a aplicação da terapêutica para além da janela temporal recomendada e a hipercolesterolemia parecem influenciar o prognóstico dos doentes.Introduction: Sudden neurosensory hearing loss is a pathology whose frequency has increased as time goes by, still, the difficulty in establishing an etiology remains, and, consequently in establishing a more efficient therapeutical plan. Therefore, it is pressing to analyse the effects of the applied treatments, whereby the objective of this essay is to review the current literature on the use of hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the treatment of this disease and to understand how it can benefit the patients. Materials and methods: The survey was carried out following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Through a search in Pubmed, Cochrane and Web of Science databases, searching by the keywords “sudden hearing loss”; “hyperbaric oxygen”; “salvage”; “sudden sensorineural hearing loss” and “HBO”, several articles were collected to serve the purpose if this literature gathering about the sudden neurosensory hearing loss. Results: The literature search resulted in a total of 56 documents, but after eliminating duplicate articles and applying the exclusion criteria, only 8 were included in the study. A total of 545 patients and 547 ears were considered to this study. In order to evaluate the primary therapy used in these cases the results of its application to 405 ears were analysed and lastly, to study the effectiveness of the salvage therapy, the results of its application to 142 ears. The use of oxygen therapy in a hyperbaric chamber is a common factor to all studies. Conclusion: The application of corticosteroids and hyperbaric oxygen therapy proved to be a good therapeutic option for patients with the onset of symptoms within a time interval of less than 14 days. However, due to the multiplicity of methodologies used, in the cases when the onset of symptoms was between 14 days and 4 weeks, it is not clear which therapeutic approach achieves the best outcome.
