Innovation reefs (I-Reef): a comparison with the main ecosystems

The I-Reef (Innovation Reef) is a model for modern Innovation Ecosystems based on the metaphor of oceanic reefs, whose approach to current practices is more complete in terms of innovation systems and relationship networks. However, to demonstrate the evolution of the models and demonstrate the effectiveness of the I-Reef, the approach requires a more detailed and in-depth theoretical study. With the objective of this deepening, a comparison of the I-Reef with the main models of economic ecosystems present in the literature was carried out. To achieve this purpose, a systematic literature review on Business, Innovation, Knowledge-based, and Entrepreneurial Ecosystems was carried out. As the theoretical base for this study, 510 articles were found and analyzed. The study shows similarities and differences between the I-Reefs and the evaluated ecosystem models. Among them, we can mention the need for government support identified mainly in Business Ecosystems; the focus on the development and transfer of knowledge and technology verified in the Knowledge Ecosystem, which also differentiates in seeking a strong network of mutualistic relationships in contrast to not so strict networks of cooperation in business ecosystems. The ecosystem approach has grown, which generates a broad base for comparison and contributes to model development.
