Resumo: Os seres humanos não vivem em isolamento, mas, pelo contrário, fazem parte duma sociedadeespecífica e, por isso, interagem com outros seres humanos. No entanto, a interacção humana não é nem caótica nem à vontade de cada falante. Este facto tornou-se a base de um artigo de Grice(1), onde afirma: “Our talk exchanges do not normally consist of a succession of disconnected remarks, and would not be rational if they did. They are characteristically, to some degree at least, cooperative efforts; and each participant recognizes in them, to some extent, a common purpose or set of p urposes, or at least a mutually accepted direction.”
