Manipulative materials in learning mathematics: using the Decimal Board to understand the meanings of addition

Resumo: The importance of the use of concrete manipulatives as an aid to mathematical learning is a central theme and targeted in scientific studies of the specialty. On the other hand, the use of these materials allows the pupils to feel, touch and manipulate, moving from active representations to visual and/or symbolic representations, evolving from concrete to abstract. During the accomplishment of the training inserted in the educational practice in the first year of primary education with 25 students, we noticed that the students had some difficulties in the understanding of addition meanings. The difficulties related to the notion of the number sense and little understanding of arithmetic operations meanings, namely addition, represent, according to several authors, the great difficulties felt by the pupils in Mathematics. Thus, the following research question arises: Does the use of the Decimal Board influence students’ understanding (ou knowledge) of the meanings of arithmetic addition and the fundamental principles of decimal number system? Thereby, it became relevant the development of a qualitative study, of interpretative nature and with an action research design. The analysis of the collected data shows an improvement in understanding the addition meanings, the principles of decimal number system and the composition in a superior order unity. These evidences suggest that the use of the Decimal Board was an artifact that helped promote these mathematical learnings.

Por otro lado, el uso de materiales permite a los estudiantes sentir, tocar y manipular, pasando así de representaciones activas a visuales y/o simbólicas, evolucionando del concreto al abstracto. Al realizar la pasantía en el 1.º de educación primaria con 25 alumnos, fue posible comprender algunas dificultades, sentidas por los estudiantes, en términos de comprensión de los significados de la adición. Las dificultades relacionadas con el sentido del número y de los significados de las operaciones aritméticas, concretamente la adición, constituyen, según varios autores, las grandes dificultades que sienten los estudiantes en el área de las matemáticas. Así, surgió la siguiente pregunta: ¿El uso del Tablero Decimal influye en la comprensión de los estudiantes sobre los significados de la operación aritmética de adición y los principios fundamentales del sistema de numeración decimal? Así, se hizo relevante el desarrollo de un estudio cualitativo, de naturaleza interpretativa y con un diseño de investigación-acción. El análisis de los datos recopilados muestra una mejora en la comprensión de los significados de la adición, de los principios del sistema de numeración decimal y de la composición en una unidad de orden superior. Estas evidencias sugieren que el uso del Tablero Decimal fue un artefacto que ayudó a promover estos aprendizajes matemáticos. A importância da utilização dos materiais manipuláveis como auxílio das aprendizagens matemáticas é um tema fulcral e visado nos estudos científicos da especialidade. Por outro lado, a utilização destes materiais proporciona aos alunos que sintam, toquem e manipulem, passando das representações ativas para as representações visuais e/ou simbólicas, evoluindo do concreto para o abstrato. Através do contacto com 25 alunos do 1.º ano de escolaridade, no âmbito do estágio da prática educativa, foram detetadas dificuldades ao nível da compreensão dos sentidos da adição. As dificuldades relacionadas com o sentido de número e a diminuta compreensão dos significados das operações aritméticas, nomeadamente na adição, constituem, segundo diversos autores, as grandes dificuldades sentidas pelos alunos, na área da matemática. Deste modo, surgiu a seguinte questão de investigação: De que modo o uso do Tabuleiro Decimal influencia a compreensão dos alunos sobre os sentidos da operação aritmética adição e os princípios fundamentais do sistema de numeração decimal? Assim, tornou-se pertinente o desenvolvimento de um estudo qualitativo, de índole interpretativa e com um design investigação-ação. A análise dos dados recolhidos evidencia uma melhoria na compreensão dos alunos sobre os sentidos da adição, os princípios do sistema de numeração decimal e a composição em uma unidade de ordem superior.
