Resumo: In the last decades, studies on the history of vineyards and wine in the Douro region have multiplied, with emphasis on Port wine, due to its economic and social dimension. However, the Douro wine region has other aspects. The sparkling wine produced in the region with a business framework constitutes an innovation in Douro winemaking at the end of the 19th century, which deserves to be historically analyzed. To understand how this winemaking technique imported from France was introduced in the the region, to identify the protagonists of this innovation in Douro, to analyze the social and economic dynamics of Lamego, a city where, between the end of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century, a successful company dedicated to the production of sparkling wine emerged, are the goals of this research. The study, whose chronological landmarks are located between the 1880s and the 1930s, is based on several sources, especially newspapers (published in Lamego and Porto), but also archival sources, both public (parish and notarial records) as private, coming from family and business archives. Born and raised in Lamego, José Teixeira Rebelo Júnior, together with his father-in-law, Adelino Pereira do Vale, established, in the last years of the 19th century, a family firm that quickly settled itself in the national and Brazilian market, bringing a new image to the wine sector for the city and the region. This paper highlights the entrepreneurial capacity of these men who, taking advantage of opportunities and seeking the necessary support, knew how to look for techniques and products that would constitute an alternative to the wine crisis that was then raging throughout the Douro.
