Resumo: The question what are the spaces between buildings?, was the starting point for the development of a research project that proposed to reinterpret, critically, the problems which are inherent in the current strategies for the conception of public space, and trying to relate all the factors that influence the job of the architect in this demanding task of urban transformation. The space between buildings was chosen as the object to give shape to our reflection, after recognizing that, in the current criticism, the attention is predominantly given to the buildings and the urban plans, as the study on the spaces that connects everything and everyone - the old buildings, the new ones and ones in project - is still scarce, and the same goes to the theory of the organization of these spaces. From the point of view of authors such as Oriol Bohigas and Jordi Borja, the public space should be the representation of a society and the life quality of its citizens. However, it is verified that this relationship has been violated by the conflict of interest regarding the use of public land. In addition, the extreme specialization of the intervening areas weakens the production process, as well as the subsequent management of public spaces. As a result, the concept of public space has been vulgarized, distorted and became a product that is manipulated by market laws and by those with economic power. In units of collective housing, which has been the predominant program in the construction of cities since the beginning of the 20th century, it is often to encounter disqualified public outdoor spaces, especially in projects with social scope. Therefore, we deepen our study by emphasizing the connection between the design of building and of the outer space, with the intention to produce principles that can serve as guidelines for future design processes. The conception of public space should be supported by a system which articulates the interests of different entities, as well as the knowledge of the various scientific areas, and which also promotes an active participation of citizens in the creative process. The process of construction of this project gathered: investigation of bibliographic sources; physical experience of projects, that tests the authenticity of the theories acquired in the readings; and production of materials and iconographic documents, that constitute our personal archive. These phases were essential to elaborate the answer to the initial question, which ultimately seeks to reclaim the position of public space in the topics of contemporary debate on Architecture and Urbanism
