Film Atmosphere and the Time Abyss: Pictorial Melancholy in Portrait of a Lady on Fire

This article seeks a possible analytical path into the unstable concept of atmosphere in cinema. It proposes a double theoretical movement: (1) the identification of an ‘affective atmosphere’ through the combination of a set of dynamics inherent to atmosphere with the vocabulary of affect theory, focusing on ‘love-related melancholia’ and ‘mourning’; (2) an approximation, due to the temporal aspect intrinsic to such affects, between the perception-memory theory developed by Bergson and the expression of time-image, specifically the notion of ‘crystal image’ as presented by Deleuze. Through illumination and texture, with references to painting and the constant use of the tableau vivant in Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Céline Sciamma, 2019), the article explores the expression of an atmosphere related to mourning and love-related melancholia in film, one that glimpses over its ‘time abyss’ at saturated spaces.
