Surveys were held aiming producers, storers, retailers and wholesalers, and mills that work with yellow maize and white maize, but also bakeries that have an output of yellow or white maize bread. Questionnaires were carried out mostly in the Districts of Viana do Castelo, Braga, Porto, Coimbra and Leiria during the months of July / August 2013 and December 2013 / January 2014. It was established that the risk of adventitious presence on GM maize is real and thus there is the possibility of maize bread being traded with percentages of GMO’s exceeding (in excess of) 0.9% without being labelled. A lot of shortcomings in the traceability of maize batches along the supply chain were detected.
