Limited options or blocked mobility? The socio-professional mobility of Brazilian immigrants in Portugal

Resumo: Though there is a long tradition of migration studies in Portugal, specific analysis of the socio-professional mobility of immigrants has received limited attention. Based on a survey that was carried out in 2009 and involved 1398 Brazilian immigrants, this text seeks to examine this topic in greater depth by observing their integration patterns at three points in time: before migration, on arrival and at the  moment of the survey. The main issues in question are to assess whether trajectories of upward mobility exist, albeit to a limited degree, as the research available has suggested; whether it is correct to speak of barriers to these courses of development; and whether factors that may influence them exist. The results point towards limited upward trajectories, though consideration of the year of arrival and certain characteristics of the immigrants allows us to predict more positive progression.

Este texto,basado en una encuesta realizada a 1398 inmigrantes brasileños, aplicada en 2009, pretende profundizar esa temática, observando sus patrones de inserción en tres momentos: antes de la migración, a la llegada y  aquando de la encuesta. Las principales cuestiones en debate son evaluar si las trayectorias de mobilidad ascendente existen pero son limitadas, como ha sido sugerido por la investigación disponible; si esapropiado hablar em bloqueios a esses percursos; y si existen factores que los pueden influenciar. Los resultados apuntan hacia trayectorias ascendentes limitadas, aunque la consideración del año de llegada y dealgunas características de los inmigrantes permita antever trayectos más positivos.Bien qu'il y ait au Portugal une longue tradition d'études sur les migrations, l'analyse particulière de la mobilité socioprofessionnelle des immigrés n'a guère suscité d'intérêt. Cet article, rédigé à partir d'uneenquête menée auprès de 1398 immigrés brésiliens en 2009, vient approfondir cet aspect en observant les modèles d'insertion à trois moments: avant la migration, à l'arrivée et au moment de l’enquête. Lesprincipales questions visent à savoir si les trajectoires de mobilité ascendante existent mais sont limitées, comme le suggèrent les recherches disponibles; si l'on peut parler de blocages sur ces parcours; et s'il existedes facteurs susceptibles de les influencer. Les résultats montrent que les trajectoires ascendantes sont limitées, même si l'influence de l'année d'arrivée et du profil des immigrés peut faire fonctionner l'ascenseursocial.Apesar de haver em Portugal uma longa tradição de estudos sobre migrações, a análise específica da mobilidade socioprofissional dos imigrantes tem sido alvo de reduzida atenção. Este texto, baseado num inquérito a 1398 imigrantes brasileiros realizado em 2009, pretende aprofundar essa temática, observando os seus padrões de inserção em três momentos: antes da migração, à chegada e no momento da inquirição. As principais questões em debate são avaliar se as trajectórias de mobilidade ascendente existem mas são limitadas, como tem sido sugerido pela investigação disponível; se é apropriado falar em bloqueios a esses percursos; e se existem factores que os podem influenciar.
