Universidade do PortoIn this thesis, the main concern regards the effect of shoot tipping (apex removal of the main shoot) in association/or not to boron treatment (B) on the productive and qualitative parameters of the cv. Grillo, that it shows, in particular vintages, a high level of coulure and millerandage. Grillo represents the most important white cultivar in Siciliy.The vineyard where the trial was carried on, is located in “Tenuta Rapitalà” (western of Sicily). The experimental design was a split-plot, where 4 treatments replicated three times were set up, as follow: Shoot tipping (ST) consisted in emoving only the apex of the main shoot three days before the beginning of flowering; Boron treatment (B) at 0.03% realized at the beginning of flowering and at 50% of flowering; Shoot tipping (ST-B) and boron treatment realized as described above; Control (NST-NB) without no treatments. Shoot tipping realized shortly before blooming period did achieved the expected results. Shoot tipping affected vegetative (decreased the total length of the main shoot), productive (influenced positively weight clusters, increasing the berry number and berry weight) and qualitative (decreased the total solid soluble) parameters. The boron treatment seems to have caused problems of toxicity. The first symptoms were the inhibition of lateral shoot growth especially in terms of node number, leaf size and area. It improved also number of berries of the first cluster and the seed number per berry, hence it improved the fertilization process. In conclusion shoot tipping improved the yield of cultivar Grillo.
