Para tal, foi desenvolvido um teste experimental online de leitura auto-monitorizada, aplicado a três grupos distintos de participantes. Os dois grupos experimentais são compostos por falantes de Mandarim L1, que se distinguem quanto ao nível de proficiência de Português, e o outro por falantes nativos de português europeu (PE). As frases incluídas na tarefa têm sintagmas nominais compostos por nomes e adjetivos, animados e inanimados, sendo que uma parte corresponde a nomes que também em chinês marcam o contraste de género. A outra parte corresponde a nomes que, em chinês, não marcam o género gramatical. Esta pesquisa tem como principais objetivos: (i) analisar os tempos de processamento do género gramatical em Português por aprendentes chineses de PL2 e por falantes nativos; (ii) identificar se as condições com género gramatical com diferenças entre Português e Chinês causam maior dificuldade de processamento ao aprendente de PLNM cuja L1 é mandarim; e (iii) observar a influência do nível de proficiência em Português no desempenho dos aprendentes chineses na identificação e processamento do género gramatical. Antes de mais, os resultados indicam que o desempenho dos aprendentes de PL2 é diferente do dos falantes nativos e que os tempos de leitura dos grupos experimentais são muito mais elevados do que os do grupo de controlo. Além disso, confirma-se o efeito da língua materna na aquisição do PL2. Os resultados mostram que a condição de nomes inanimados com adjetivo que não marcam o género em chinês foi a mais difícil de processar. Com base nos dados estatísticos, confirma-se também que nas condições inanimadas, os itens de estímulos com género masculino facilitam o processamento em português. Ademais, os resultados das análises realizadas demonstram que os participantes que viveram em Portugal pelo menos dois anos mostram melhor competência de processamento do género gramatical do que os alunos sem estadia em País lusófono.The present study aims to investigate the knowledge and processing of grammatical gender in Portuguese as a second language (PL2) by native Chinese speakers. To this end, a web-based self- paced reading study was developed and applied to three different groups of participants. The two experimental groups are composed of Mandarin L1 speakers, who are distinguished by their Portuguese proficiency level, and the control group, by native speakers of European Portuguese (EP). The sentences included in this study have noun phrases composed of nouns and adjectives, animate and inanimate. Part of the sentences contains noun phrases with gender marking that match in both Chinese and Portuguese. The other part contains names that, in Chinese, there is no the gender assignment (no grammatical gender). This research has as main objectives: (i) to analyze the processing times of the grammatical gender in Portuguese by Chinese PL2 learners and by native speakers; (ii) identify whether conditions with grammatical gender with differences between Portuguese and Chinese cause greater processing difficulties for the NLP learner whose L1 is Mandarin; and (iii) to observe the influence of the level of proficiency in Portuguese on the performance of Chinese learners in the identification and processing of grammatical gender. First of all, the results indicate that the performance of PL2 learners is different from that of native speakers and that the reading times of the experimental groups are much higher than those of the control group. In addition, the effect of the mother tongue on the acquisition of PL2 is confirmed. The results show that the condition of inanimate nouns with adjectives that do not mark gender in Chinese was the most difficult to process. Based on the statistical data, it is also confirmed that in inanimate conditions, stimulus items with masculine gender facilitate processing in Portuguese.
