Resumo: The extensive loss of the invaluable Alexandrian medical literature makes Celsus the closest, and ultimately the only, evidence in chronological terms of a period of intense scientific production in general and medical progress in particular. His greatest achievement isn’t however related to this circumstance, but rather to the unique content of these books. Suffice to say that to the remarkable Hippocratic and Alexandrian traditions, Celsus has added a substantial amount of Roman originality. The innovations pertain not only to his obvious use of Latin, but also to the sociological and cultural Roman features bearing witness of a thriving Italic popular medicine, skilfully intertwined with Greek medicine, thus turning his De Medicina libri VIII into an unparalleled testimony when it comes to the understanding of medical history in the ancient world.

Su mayor mérito, no obstante, no se debe a esta circunstancia, sino a la singular riqueza de contenido de estos libros. Será suficiente recordar que a la notoria herencia hipocrática y alejandrina añadió Celso una buena dosis de originalidad romana, que no se limita a la evidencia del uso de la lengua latina, sino que abarca también y sobre todo trazos romanos sociológicos y culturales, testimonio de una medicina popular itálica latente, hábilmente imbuida de la medicina griega, que hace de los De Medicina libri VIII uno de los testimonios más valiosos para la compresión de la historia médica del mundo antiguo.A perda substancial da inestimável literatura médica alexandrina faz de Celso o testemunho cronologicamente mais próximo, ou mesmo único, de um período de intensa produção científica em geral e médica em particular. O seu maior mérito, porém, não se deve a esta circunstância, mas à singular riqueza de conteúdo destes livros.
