Resumo: | Autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) are a type of unmanned marine vehicle that are designed to navigate and operate on the surface of the water without the need for human intervention. The intent of this thesis is to develop an ASV using a combination of LoRa and technologies from the National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA). These technologies enable ASVs to communicate using significantly lower amounts of power over long distanc-es allowing for more energy and performance to be allocated to, for example, performing a variety of tasks, such as monitoring water quality, surveying coastal areas, and assisting with search and rescue operations. The Portuguese EEZ covers approximately 1.7 million square kilometers and is one of the largest in the European Union. For these reasons it struggles with the tasks the ASV is most capable of performing, providing a low cost, low power solution that can bridge these immense distances. The proposed solution involves the use of low power systems that will provide the backbone of the communication framework, sending data over very long distances and in-terpreting it at a base station, for monitoring and control of each Surface Vehicle. This is done using Node-Red to have a base understanding of the location, pressure, altitude, direc-tion, and general status of the communications of each vessel. This communication system allows for multiple vessels to transmit over long distanc-es while using relatively low amounts of power, these characteristics make them ideal for the IoT environment. A MongoDB database was added to gather the relevant data for post pro-cessing. |
