This dissertation titled "Viana do Lima: Aspects of the urban structure of a maritime town" and the object of its study is the river front of the Viana village. The aim is to research and analyse the evolution of the village and understand its connection with the Lima River. From early history we know that villages on the coast of Portugal developed through peoples who were fundamentally sustained by an economy of trade, the comings and goings of goods, imports and exports. Not only did Viana's location facilitate these transactions in a quick and effective manner, but also as a consequence of this and the economic development, we see the growth of the urban structure of the village in the Lima river mouth occur. From the readings done initially about Viana do Castelo, this dissertation seeks to find the transformation factors for the river front. In this piece, the most decisive events and works that delineated the urban fabric of the city, from the period of its foundation until the 19th century, are exposed and related to the growth and consecutive alterations to the town's riverfront.
