A Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian e a intervenção no Património: O contributo do arquiteto Viana de Lima

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, from a contemporary perspective, has played a remarkable role on the Portuguese cultural scene. Its contribution to the dissemination and recognition of Portuguese culture has been reflected in actions to preserve the heritage of Portuguese influence in the world through projects, exhibitions and research. In this context, architect Viana de Lima's contribution to the realization of projects stands out. Recognized for representing Le Corbusier's principles in his work and for having contributed to the dissemination of the modern movement in Portugal, he also accompanied its questioning. His work thus reflects modern principles and a culturalist line that values tradition, identity and creativity. These values become more evident from the 1970s onwards, when he dedicated himself to heritage projects, working as a consultant for UNESCO and collaborating with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Moreover, he contributed towards raising awareness of the importance of heritage in Portugal through the creation of the Portuguese Institute of Cultural Heritage. The dissertation analyzes the architect's career, taking into account his experiences, the relationships he established within it, and the projects he carried out for the Foundation, which proved to be of singular importance in the preservation of heritage. Furthermore, the Foundation's method of action in this area is analyzed. The dissertation thus seeks to establish a new perspective on the work of the architect Viana de Lima, understanding how his interest in heritage arose which, in collaboration with the Foundation, culminated in a notable contribution to the preservation of Portuguese influenced heritage around the world.
