Evocating the memory of doctor António Carvalho de Figueiredo (1853-1917) partnership in the area of history and culture between the Câmara Municipal de Loures and the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

This article aims to highlight the partnership between the municipality of Loures and the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the mainfield of history and culture in order to promote the knowledge and research about the life and work of António Carvalho de Figueiredo, MD (1853-1917). First health subdelegate of the new municipality of Loures (created in 1886) and a man of science, pioneer in Malaria and Sleeping Disease research, recognized by his peers. To evoke the centenary of his death, the municipality of Loures has developed an extensive cultural program along 2017 to april 2018. The highlights of the program are: the exhibitions " Cem anos após o desaparecimento … António Carvalho de Figueiredo (1853-1917): o homem e a obra "and" Higiene e saúde em Loures, à época de António Carvalho de Figueiredo. Quotidianos públicos e privados entre 1886 e 1938"; the Symposium " Medicina, investigação e sociedade na transição para o século XX ". These different activities and the investigations addressed, gave us a more comprehensive and strong knowledge about the physician António Carvalho de Figueiredo and his daily work in the Municipality of Loures, in the transition from the XIX to the XX century.
