BRAZILIAN VEGETARIAN SOCIETY: topics on eugenics, morals and hygiene through the trajectory of Francisco Jaguaribe (1917-1923)

Resumo: This research presents the Brazilian Vegetarian Society (SVB, in the Brazilian Portuguese acronym) during the second decade of the 20th century. Two aspects, in particular, are privileged in the analysis of the sources: the first is related to the involvement of the cartographer Francisco Jaguaribe de Mattos in this society. The second verses on how the discourses of hygiene and anti-alcoholism are present in the concerns of the SVB in view of an ideal of morality and nation. The unfolding of this latter discussion led us to the direction of the eugenicist proposals addressed in the texts of the SVB. Thus, we seek to answer what was the content and purpose of this eugenic discourse for their proposals around vegetarianism. The result of the research points to the way in which Jaguaribe and the SVB articulated a proposal for national reformism based on eugenics.

Dos puntos, en particular, son privilegiados en el análisis de las fuentes: el primero está relacionado con la participación del cartógrafo Francisco Jaguaribe de Mattos en la sociedad. El segundo, trata de cómo los discursos de higiene y antialcoholismo están presentes en las preocupaciones de la SVB frente a un ideal de moralista y nacionalista. El desarrollo de esta última discusión condujo a propuestas eugenésicas abordadas en los textos de la SVB. De este modo, se busca responder cuál fue el contenido y propósito de este discurso eugenésico para sus propuestas en torno al vegetarianismo. El resultado de la investigación apunta que, Jaguaribe y la SVB, articularon una propuesta de reformismo nacional basada en la eugenesia.A pesquisa apresenta a Sociedade Vegetariana Brasileira (SVB) durante a segunda década do século XX. Dois pontos, em especial, são privilegiados na análise das fontes: o primeiro é relativo ao envolvimento do cartógrafo Francisco Jaguaribe de Mattos na sociedade. O segundo versa como os discursos de higiene e antialcoolismo estiverem presentes nas preocupações da SVB em vista de um ideal de moralidade e nação. O desdobramento dessa última discussão nos levou ao encontro das propostas eugenistas abordadas nos textos da SVB. Assim, buscamos responder qual era o teor e a finalidade desse discurso eugênico para as suas propostas em torno do vegetarianismo.
