The museum experience from the perspective of the Contextual Model of Learning: an understanding from the long-term memories of the visitors

Resumo: This paper presents a case study that analyses the memories of a group of people that participated in an experience carried out in the museum space, after four years have elapsed. The aim of the research was to understand how the recovery of the visitants’ long-term memories, analysed from the perspective of the Contextual Model of Learning (CML), may contribute to the understanding of learning in museums. The recovery of memories was made by resorting to semi-structured interviews conducted (and audio-recorded) with seven students of Primary and Secondary Schools (14 to 16 years old), who had participated in 2009 in an experience in a science museum. Data were analysed by using a Discursive Textual Analysis methodology. We focused on elements related to the personal, physical and socio-cultural contexts of the CML, which emerged from the long-term memories of the subjects. Results point to the presence of eight key factors of the model, which highlight the complexity and richness of the museum experience. The insight into these key factors of the CML, as well as into the relationships between them, enables the qualification of the organization and the analysis of the learning occurring in non-formal education settings.

El objetivo de la investigación fue deprender como la recuperación de las memorias de largo plazo de visitantes, analizadas bajo la óptica del Modelo Contextual de Aprendizaje [MCA], ayudó a contribuir para la comprensión del aprendizaje museal. La recuperación de las memorias fue realizada por medio de entrevistas semiestructuradas, gravadas en audio con siete estudiantes de la enseñanza básica y de la secundaria, en edades entre 14 y 16 años, que participaran en 2009 de una experiencia en un museo de ciencias. Para análisis de los datos fue utilizado el Análisis Textual Discursivo. Se buscó elementos relacionados a los contextos personal, físico y sociocultural del MCA, que emergieran de las memorias a lo largo plazo de los sujetos. Los resultados identificaran para la experiencia museal. La comprensión y relación entre los factores clave del MCA permite la cualificación de la organización y análisis del aprendizaje en los espacios no formales de educación.Este artigo apresenta um estudo de caso, no qual se analisam as memórias de um grupo de participantes de uma vivência realizada no espaço museal, após transcorridos quatro anos. O objetivo da investigação foi depreender como a recuperação das memórias de longo prazo de visitantes, analisadas sob a ótica do Modelo Contextual de Aprendizagem [MCA], pode contribuir para a compreensão da aprendizagem museal. A recuperação das memórias foi realizada por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas gravadas em áudio com sete estudantes do ensino fundamental e médio, com idades entre 14 e 16 anos, que participaram em 2009 de uma experiência em um museu de ciências. Para análise dos dados foi utilizada a Análise Textual Discursiva. Buscaram-se elementos relacionados aos contextos pessoal, físico e sociocultural do MCA, que emergiram das memórias de longo prazo dos sujeitos. Os resultados apontaram para a presença dos oito fatores chave do modelo, revelando a complexidade e a riqueza da experiência museal.
