Desta forma iremos tentar com¬preender se a linguagem gráfica desta designer “penetrou” no Design Gráfico português, e se conseguiu, de alguma forma, enraizar-se nas gerações contemporâneas e influenciá-las através da sua linguagem gráfica, ou se pelo contrário, foram as linguagens das correntes e seus movimentos artísticos dos séculos XIX e XX que influenciaram o Design contemporâneo nacional.This dissertation has as main object of study and analysis, life and artistic career of the contemporary American designer Paula Scher, born in 1948 in Virginia. This research aims to make known to the scientific community, and a new generation of graphic designers, her artistic production and visual language that made her an undisputed icon in the world of Graphic Design, and a complete and crossroads artist by the way she applies her graphic vocabulary in several art domains. Thus, taking as a starting point the artistic career of Paula Scher, we will proceed to the investigation and analysis on this issue, based on the literature found, with the main objective to highlight the quality of this artist and creator, assuming and justifying her trasverse and her work, also based in Art and Design movements that influenced the designer. However, this analysis to the artistic career of Paula Scher, cannot be drawn precisely and sustained without knowing in first place her artistic background and influences, and all of those who contri-buted in any way for her career, shaping her personality as a designer. Thus, we will essay an approach to the historical context of Arts and Design at the international level, since the second half of the nine¬teenth century to the present and the contexts of post-modernism. To complete this dissertation, we believe that is essential an approach to the historical context of Portuguese Design, which is still in cons-truction due to the dispersion of information. We propose then take as a starting point the 1920s, a period corres-ponding to the birth of illustration in Portugal and its use for com-mercial, cultural and other needs of that time as well as the emer¬gence of artists who began to specialize in this art, developing it from generation to generation until we reach the present and Graphic Design. We also intend to highlight the contribution that these artists had in Portuguese society and its artistic context. At last, it will be done a brief iconological analysis of three pieces if art chosen by us, from three distinct design studios, recognized by Portuguese comunity of designers, and comparated with three parallel works of Paula Scher, also selected by us by their formal and aesthetic similarities.
