In this work, the main objective was to study the possibility of treating a real effluent from a pharmaceutical plant (COD ≈ 12,000 ppm and TOC ≈ 4500 ppm) by different advanced oxidation processes, more specifically, by wet air oxidation (WAO) and catalytic wet air oxidation (CWAO), photochemical oxidation with ultraviolet irradiation (UV), ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) and ultraviolet-visible in the presence of a co oxidant (UV-Vis/H2O2), photo-Fenton (UV-Vis/H2O2/Fe2+), ultraviolet-visible photocatalytic oxidation (UV-Vis/TiO2), and ultraviolet photocatalytic oxidation (UV/TiO2). In the WAO test, a TOC removal of 21% after 180 min of reaction was obtained. In the CWAO tests, carbon xerogels prepared by polycondensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde and platinum supported on carbon xerogel were used as catalysts. TOC removals of 18% and 27% after 180 min was obtained when using the carbon xerogel and the platinum supported carbon xerogel catalysts, respectively. In the tests carried out with UV-Vis and UV-Vis/H2O2, promising results were obtained, mainly with UV-Vis, where a TOC removal of 53% after 180 min of reaction was achieved. The addition of H2O2 to the process led to a slight decrease in TOC removal. Considering the use of a TiO2 catalyst, a semiconductor material, as an alternative to the addition of H2O2, in the UV-Vis (UV-Vis/TiO2) process, the TOC removal after 180 min was 50%. The best results in terms of TOC removal were obtained using the photo-Fenton process (UV-Vis/H2O2/Fe2+), with a TOC removal of 58% (4500 mg L-1 H2O2, 75 mg L-1 Fe2+ ) after 180 min of reaction. For the tests considering the use of UV radiation (UV and UV/TiO2), the best result were obtained using the UV/TiO2 process, with 33% removal of TOC after 180 min of reaction. Degradation studies by UV-Vis, and UV-Vis/TiO2 in the absence of light, considering the effluent diluted 10-fold, concluded that there are no improvements to the best results obtained with the undiluted effluent: the UV-Vis process was able to remove 56% of TOC after 180 min of reaction. |
