Resumo: The main focus of this dissertation is the study of the interventions made by the Direcção-Geral dos Edifícios e Monumentos Nacionais on the Portuguese historical heritage and the consequently publication of the interventions in the DGEMN bulletins. The first part aims to frame the timeline and field of study. Analysing the political and historical context that preceded the time being studied and the creation of organisations dedicated to the interventions and protection of the Portuguese heritage. The study of the social and political evolution since the Monarquia Constitucional followed by the Primeira República until the national dictatorship allows for a path of legislation, interventions and measures adopted, to be followed. On the second part the Portuguese outlook on the preservation of monuments is compared to its European counterparts, the various theories on the subject and the papers they produced: the Athens Charter for the Restoration of Historic Monuments (1931), the International Charter for the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites (1964), the Convention Concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972) e the European Charter of the Architectural Heritage (1975). The third part, with a practical approach, aims to analyse the information on the bulletins perusing the interventions made as well as the way they were transmitted. The organisation and schematization of the information collected allows a work methodology full in cross comparisons of broad factors. The evolution of the work led to the need for this type of approach, built upon real case studies which, due to their rich history and conservation appeared to be the one who more accurately represent the subjects discussed throughout this dissertation. Lastly, we hope to better understand the nexus between social and political powers such as architecture, through analysis of the interventions made in the Portuguese religious heritage.
