Resumo: | This essay reflects upon the roots of the concept of monument and its evolution over time as a way to answer the question what is "to be monument" today? The relevance of the theme is based on the paradox that accompanies the actual existence of the monument: although still very present in our society is commonly denied its construction and often receives other designations such as "architectural icon".Therefore, we intent to dispel the moral conflict that has pursued this concept in the last years through the analysis of the existent relationship between monument and power, being given special attention to the role of the architect in this relationship. Simultaneously, it is believed that the doubts and hesitations that involve the acceptance of the idea of monument are due to the loss of its initial function of memory and dilution of the power of the "image" that characterized it for years, associated with the classic symbolism. At the core of these transformations is respectively the progressive replacement of the status of sign by signal of the monument, from which is accentuated its role of embellishment and ostentation, and the reinvention of the architectural language by the modern movement that, based on an idea of anti-monumentality, refused the codes of classical architecture, paving the way for the formulation of a new monumentality. These moments are the motto for the first two parts of this study, featuring in the end of the first one a distinction between the frequently confused notions of monument tout court and historical monument. The third part of this study seeks to understand what characterizes the monument today and what distinguishes it from the "architectural icon". The distinction between these concepts is based on certain characteristics that, after the analysis made, we have considered being fundamental to the essence of the monument giving it its character of fetish: its collective ritual nature and its relationship with time and memory. This thesis intends to recall the importance of the monument as an urban fact essential for the city, seeking to establish a warning about what will constitute the memories of our future. |
