Transition of a family member into the role of caregiver for a colorectal cancer patient

Aim: Describe how a family member deals with the transition to caretaker of a colorectal cancer patient, according to Transitions in Nursery Theory. Method: Literature review through Cochrane Reviewers Handbook steps between November and December of 2010. Results: There were 10 articles analyzed: 8 primary studies, 2 sistematic reviews of literature.Through the data analysis, we have concluded that patiences’ health condition varies with the course of the disease and/or treatment, but we weren’t able to identify the moment that changes occur; what factors enable them and what is the impact in the role of the family member caretaker. Conclusions: These studies describe the impact of a cancer disease in family environment but they don’t work on the moment that the family member perceives the role transition to caretaker. Nurses can help the family members in this process through instruments able to track and follow these clients, based on personal and comunitary conditions which have impact in this role performance as well the answer padrons of the role performance.
